Variations on a Ninth

Almost a very good start - well controlled. Not quite right with cornets and percussion or Cornets and Troms (but it's close). "E" is a little fast but is very well played. Good intonation in Euphs, horns and troms before and during "H". All detail is good as is attention to dynamics. Unlucky solo cornet. Almost brilliant sop! Excellent horn (accompaniment is very good too). Baritone could take more time. Euph could relax just a little more on the way up, but it is all very good. "P" is excellent. Nice sounding horn (if a little overdone with the dynamics) at variation IV. "Q" not so good.

Very stylish Solo Cornet. Good tutti sound at the Con Passione (trom could be broader) - great sop. Good attempt at ppp by all (sort out valve noise bass) - cym 5 before "S"? Classy Euph and cornet follows suit as does the rest of the band in the ensuing tutti which is really well controlled so that the FF really means something. Great Xylo, but side drum??? at "V" This goes along with swing with everyone having fun it seems (except side drum perhaps)

"1" could have been negotiated better. Andante is very nice (sometimes overdone by S. Cornet on espr. maybe) "4" very sedate in tempo and volume. Troms could be louder too. Four and five after "5" is well negotiated. "6" Careful on percussion. Everyone could play broader.

This was quite an experience - when I saw the score I thought "Oh Yeh!!!" You proved me wrong.

Well done to all soloists, Conductor and the rest.

Gareth Pritchard.
